Origins
St Agatha's Trust
fund arose out out of capital which came from the sale of a
mother-and-baby home that belonged to the Diocese of
Sheffield. This happened a long time ago!
Sheffield Diocese is the
organisation headquarters of the Church of England, in the
South Yorkshire area from Sheffield in the South to Goole in
the North East of the Diocese.
The 'Mother and Baby
Home' was founded as an expression of Christian concern for
people who at the time were considered vulnerable and needed
support.
Changing times
Times have changed, and
today different groups of people have become isolated. Society
is becoming fragmented and much effort is needed to overcome
all the forces that cause division and alienation.
The Christian church
believes that Jesus Christ showed compassion and kindness to
the marginalised people of his day - and that he expects his
followers to work with him and for him amongst such people in
every generation.
The Church is therefore
committed to to the task of breaking down prejudice and
division and rebuilding community - but in practice local
churches and Christian groups often lack the resources to
translate vision into reality.
In a small way we seek
to help supply kick-start funding for such groups, in the hope
that they will then attract more resources and support along
the way.
St Agatha's Today
In the "notes
for guidance",
it says "The principle aim of the trustees is to
initiate projects which enable the church to be more socially
responsible."
Because of this we will
therefore seek to support groups and projects with a Christian
basis before considering others. However community project
applications without such links may well be funded.
